Open to Suggestion

i have a cold...again. this is not the way i want to start my beloved fall season. it seems like as soon as i get rid of one cold, another one rears its ugly head. i'm sick of being sick.

the problem here is that i hate taking medicine. i'm super sensitive to things like benadryl and tylenol cold & flu. it makes me really loopy then knocks me out, leaving me groggy for hours after i wake up (even if it's the next day). obviously, i try not to take that stuff when i can avoid it.

so, my question to you is, what home remedies do you recommend? did your mom spoon-feed you some awful concoction that worked wonders? as long as it's alcohol-free, i'm open to trying pretty much anything.

help!

When I'm sick, I throw on the humidfier, take lots of extra showers and drink Starbucks Passion tea. It might not make the sickness go, but I feel better along the trip through it.

Saw you on BBN....

Sorry you are sick. I HATE with a passion being sick. My grandma used to feed me CodLiver Oil..it was ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. I don't know if they still make that stuff but I would assume you would be able to find it in a health food store or herbal store. Also my mom used to give me Father John cough syrup, it was a chocolatly nasty mess but it worked. Homemade chicken noodle soup worked everytime as well. Those are my old school remedies. My new school remedies...well I dont like tea at all so I did hot water as if I was making tea, dropped in a couple of lemon or menthol cough drops, let them melt in there and breathe in , helps with congestion and I would put some lemon in there and drink up. That helped a lot too. So those are just a few I could think of at this moment that I could or would do. Hope you feel better REALLY soon!!

Echonecea (spelling may be off). It's an herb that boost your immune system. It will only shorten your cold once you have it but if you take it regularly you should not get as many.

I'm so sorry you're sick again! I'm not a fan of taking meds either. I know this sounds so gross, but Steve mixes fresh garlic with honey and basically drinks it. When we were in Jamaica for our honeymoon, Steve was sick and they swore by it. It worked for him. wishing you luck and hope you feel better very soon! Xoxox

I stick with the old standby, a big thermos of tea with honey and lemon (and something a bit stronger to soothe the throat, if conditions allow). Feel better soon!

The neti pot works great at clearing congestion/sinus issues up. I also put a teaspoon or so of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink it a couple times a day when I'm sick.

Someone told me about putting Vicks VapoRub on your feet before bed, then put on socks. I was actually told to do that for Chloe, but that it works on adults too. It works on her, so I planned to try it myself the next time I got a cold. Let me know if you try it out!

I didn't think I had any ideas but just noticed Stephanie's comment above. I have heard similar but with either vinegar socks (that is what the Dominicans say) or cold water soaked soaks. Some people swear by it and told us to try when Alidia was sick but she got better so quickly we didn't have a chance to try. Hope you feel better soon!! :)

I'm not a tea drinker, but when I get nasty cold/sinus infections I drink hot tea with honey and lemon in it. I seriously swear by it…. once got a horrible sore throat/cold just days before I had to sing in a musical, drank that stuff like my life depended on it. BAM, healed! ;) Hope you feel better!!!

my tips are more preventive. The SECOND you begin to feel sick, start taking Vit. C. About 1,000 mgs. three times a day. I've stopped colds in their tracks that way. Several times. Another help is Airbourne. The fizzy tablet that you drink before you enter germ-ridden situations. My daughter/teacher takes Airbourne about once a month when she first starts back to school. I take one before every airplane flight. Things like that. Once I'm sick, it's hot tea and rest. :-)

Hello Carlia!
I used to get colds at the beginning of every semester. Now that I am not in school, I don't seem to have that problem. I must have been under a lot of stress for that to always happen. I would drown my cold in all forms of liquids: gatorade, water, 7up or sprite, orange juice, cranberry juice. Yeah I had to use the restroom tons but I nipped that dang cold in the bud within a few days. I am not sure if drowning it would help you and maybe you've already tried. I am a new follower from flats to flip flops. I have perused your blog and love it. I can tell you know photography. I am an amatuer. If you have time, maybe you could check out my blog.
