Things I've Learned As a Stay-At-Home Mom

being a stay-at-home mom is nothing like i expected it to be. it's crazy, stressful, and wonderful all at the same time. i wish i had the recipe for success or at least a handbook most days. it's definitely a learn-as-you-go kind of job.

but here are some things i've learned so far...

  • there's no easy way to fold a fitted sheet
  • everything stains, including leather & hardwood floors
  • toys are not nearly as fun as the boxes they came in...or the lever on the window, or the leg of a chair, or the fireplace, or the heating vents, or...
  • there is not enough coke zero in the world
  • food tastes better after it has been rolled between fingers and/or dipped in dirt
  • daddy's are way more fun than mama's
  • the sock monster in the dryer loves to eat baby socks even more than adult socks
  • poo happens...and sometimes it gets on you. it's a fact, so deal with it.
  • every conversation inevitably turns to "mack has learned... or mack sometimes does...", which not everyone is a fan of
  • cats are fun to chase, but they're even more fun when you catch them by the tail
  • being around baby food so much can make you curious, which makes you want to try it, which turns into a daily snack of vanilla custard pudding. (thanks for sharing, mack!)
  • moms are competitive. we don't mean to be, but conversations almost always turn into a one-upping competition to see whose baby is the smartest & fastest developer. (and every mom thinks her baby won)
  • rule: when someone offers to babysit, take them up on it.
  • you can never have too many pictures of your baby. it's just not possible.
  • mistakes will be made, pretty much every day.

what pearls of wisdom have you learned as a mom?

Fun list. And even as a working mama, I'd say I agree with everything.

The mama/baby competition annoys me so much. I always tell moms "My baby is average. She does everything she is supposed and doesn't excel in anyway." It's not true, but it gets the point across. ;)

I think you nailed it!!! Everything on here, with the exception of baby food sharing, is so my every day....this gave me a much needed laugh today! thanks for posting!

Shoot I was totally doing the one-up you today. Really I wasn't trying to one-up, I was empathizing. I know a way to fold a fitted sheet that ends up looking a little bit nicer then wadding it up in a roll. My grandma taught it to me. I'll have to show you the next time I see you.

Completely agree with this list!!! Ugg... damn fitted sheets drive me bananas.

I hate the mama competition and try my best not to do it but then worry I am accidentally doing it but just talking about Alidia. Ugg. It is so tough. I definitely don't TRY to do it.. just sometimes proud of my girl, but I would hate to make others feel how I sometimes feel when people are telling me all the things there baby does that mine can't! :(

hehe Alidia definitely agrees about the cats! She is after them and their tails all day long.

Love that photo of Mack!!! He looks like such a little boy (rather than little baby). He is just gorgeous!

hahahahah!!! I love the accidentally one upping each other about your babies! hahahh also the baby food, we LOVED vanilla custard pudding when we had young ones in the house. if we were good at the store we each got to pick out ONE baby food. that was our favorite! hahahah love the post!

Such a wonderful and cute post!! I couldn't agree more with "you can never have too many photos of your baby!" :) it made me smile when you wrote about his favorite toys...I love watching babies discover new things - how amused they are at the smallest of things!
Awesome tips from an awesome mama!

Great list, I especially agree with the one about taking people up on babysitting! Why is it that daddy's always get the label of being more fun? :)

This one is so true: daddy's are way more fun than mama's

I have learned that babies bounce!

Dang those fitted sheets! I love this list. Two things I've learned are:

1) You don't know how dirty your house is until your baby starts to crawl.

2) Poop becomes a totally acceptable subject to discuss at the dinner table.

Adorable and true! I just want someone to do a study on WHY babies prefer to be held standing up and no matter how you try to make it seem like you're standing, they can tell when you sit. Why, oh why?!!!

Cute list! My little boy is 6 months and really needy! Other people are way more fun than mama most days haha

Oh and I just wanted to say about the cats, its cute I know! But it's really dangerous to pull a cats tail, it can paralyze or kill them so keep an eye on them :) I don't know if most people know that so I just wanted to share in case, hope that's okay.

And to sarah lunt yes! Babies know when we are comfy and they hate it.

I wrote a post similar to this a few years ago. My kids are older now, so there are some older lessons, but here's the link, if you're interested. You might see what's coming...:-)
